SKLYAR

Skylar was adopted from the OHS after a car accident broke his pelvis and tail. After dedicated work he has made a full recovery and is a spunky, sweet, cuddly best friend.

Once bonded with you, he will always be your shadow and your cuddle buddy. He is fiercely loyal and bonds quickly. He loves walks, playing fetch, and all the cuddles. He is truly a little miracle!

He just turned 7 years old and is a terrier mix. He would benefit from a quiet low traffic household without other pets or small children.

Cold weather sometimes causes his pelvic pain to flare up but he hasn't needed his pain medication in a very long time. Benefits from frequent short walks to get the joints moving. He has a bone spur on his spine and you should avoid putting direct pressure on his lower back.

He is housebroken, but due to his previous injuries, he needs to be relieved every two to four hours during the day or he will "leak" a little when excited or napping, so you will need to keep a pad on his bed, but he usually sleeps through the night without needing to go out.

Skylar is ready and excited for his forever home!

KOOPA

Koopa is a 3 year old lab mix, 92 pounds. He is a lovely dog, smart, sociable, cuddly and trainable, a ham, and a charmer. Everyone who meets him falls in love and he has made a lot of human friends through his charisma. However, he has one too many issues for my spouse and I to handle (I am dealing with a chronic illness that is often debilitating and I don't have the emotional or logistical space to get him the stability, training, and management he needs. My spouse has caregiver burnout from taking care of me for the past year.) Additionally he shouldn't be off-leash due to prey drive, but we have a tiny backyard. He needs to run!

Koopa's great qualities:

Trainable, obedient, and knows many commands.

Generally good on leash after training heel for a few months.

Affectionate, snuggly, and hilarious. Gets along well with human strangers.

Doesn't bark much after he learns the sounds of the environment. Only barks to alert us of someone at the door.

Non-destructive

Doesn't get on furniture

Doesn't snatch food off the counters

Can be left home alone with free roam of the house. We have never had an issue.

Extremely well-behaved

Koopa's not-great qualities:

He is a resource guarder of varying intensities of food, treats, and toys, and has a single-bite history. He bit my brother, who was a guest in our house, because a piece of chicken fell on the floor nearby (did not draw blood or leave a mark).

He has a very high prey drive and shouldn't be off-leash. Walking him, he should have a head harness in case he lunges/bolts for a rabbit or squirrel.

He chased and bit a small dog at the dog park.

He is leash reactive toward other dogs. We've worked on it, but he'll likely need more training on this.

His threshold for stress is low. Too many new things at once can overwhelm him, and he regresses in his behavior when stressed out.

Will bark and growl at strangers when they come to the door (but then collapse into them with his tongue lolling out and act very friendly.)

He may have a traumatic past

Koopa's ideal home:

No cats

No small children. Teenagers could be fine.

No other dogs due to guarding.

Backyard where he can run around safely off-leash

Someone experienced with resource guarding behaviors and aggression, who can set him on the right path and give him the time and attention needed to help him thrive.

Someone who can handle him on leash if he lunges or bolts for a small animal.

CLARA

Meet Clara!

Clara is the most loving dog towards her family and dog companion. We do think she’d do best as the only dog for awhile to really work on training. Any kind of formal training and more socialization will be the key to her success. She is a reactive barker (loud noises, people/dogs approaching her) but I’ve had successful training sessions where I’ve seen improvement; I am just simply not consistent enough.

She follows you everywhere and wants to play outside any chance she gets. Clara is very unique and chases lights and shadows 24 hours a day if given the opportunity. We’ve been told it’s just her breed, but have seen similar dogs able to train out of it given time and patience. I’d consider her hyperactive but she calms down after getting exercise (LOVES fetch and hide n seek with treats).

She needs a lot of patience with training due to the shadow chasing and energetic nature. With yummy treats she loves learning commands. She’s NOT leash trained. She IS potty trained and uses potty bells (still working on the bells). She IS crate trained.

Clara is a very special girl and we want the best for her!”

DEBBIE

Debbie is a high energy dog she’s good with other animals but needs a lot of attention. She needs a yard to run around in and needs lots of attention. She loves water going to the river and running around. Also love’s attention and having her belly rubbed. She needs a loving home and some training she is puppy pad trained.

SASSY

Hi. This is Sassy.  She is a purebred cocker spaniel, 8-9 years old, spayed, current on shots, and recently groomed.  She doesn't do well with other dogs, but cats are okay. She has also been around chickens that are free range and she doesn't bother them. She's never been around small children (though she may be fine with them).  She is super sweet, loves attention, and cuddles. Somewhat timid when meeting new people, but overall is a very well mannered. She is really good in the car and loves long car rides.  She was a companion to an elderly person who can no longer care for her.

If you are looking for a sweet companion dog this is the one.

PETRA

This is Petra. Petra is a 1.5 year old female Pit Bull who was found abandoned, starving, and locked up in a batting cage in the heat of California. We adopted her through a rescue team, but she’s proving to be too much for us to handle and her extra puppy energy is more than we had expected or been prepared for. Petra is spayed and up to date on all shots. She’s also leash trained and crate trained! Her favorite thing to do is chase tennis balls (or destroy them) and go on car rides, she thoroughly enjoys meeting new people and absolutely loves children, but she would do best in a home with no other pets. Petra is working on being house broken, but she is highly motivated by treats and affection.

If you can give this sweetheart a good loving
home, please contact Kristen at (757) 386-6877 by text, or email at taylorsawyer27@yahoo.com

Domino

Domino came into our lives in December 2019. We found him here on Adoptapet where his foster family was looking for a good home for him. As a puppy he was adopted from a Sacramento, CA shelter twice and returned twice before going to the foster home we received him from.

He's been a fantastic dog with a few bumps on the way. He's wonderful with all of our kids (12, 5, 2, 8m) and even loves cats, though our cat Panzer is not his biggest fan.

Domino needs a home where he can be a primary focus of attention. He seems to suffer from anxiety tied to his failed adoptions as a puppy. His fosters informed us the adopters said he had "too much energy." In our experience he is no more energetic than a normal dog. He would probably do best with a single adult or a home with teens so he can receive the love and attention he deserves. We love him very much, but he is not getting what he needs with our schedule.

Luna

Luna is our beautiful 3 year old pit bull. She is such a good girl, and she will thrive with someone that wants to take her on long walks or hikes, and wants to work on her training. She LOVES people and other dogs, and pays no attention to our cats, but she needs to go to a home with no small children.

We love her so much and it breaks our heart to have to find her a new home, but she has so much anxiety since we had our baby it’s like she’s a different dog.

Luna has done basic training, and knows her “place” command very well. She is also kennel trained! She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on all vaccines.

Salem

Prince has been with us since he was 8 weeks old, and we love him, but we now have a 1 year-old, we both work full-time, and just can't give Prince what he needs. He's a working dog who needs either good exercise 4-5 days/week (great if he can run off-leash and he loves to swim) or to be outside for a good chunk each day. He's always been anxious, which mostly manifests in barking, but he's not aggressive and never has been. Basically, if he gets good exercise, he's a great dog (as most dogs are). He's fine around our 1 year-old (though he prefers his own space), and he's good with other dogs.

Ideal Home: We think owners who can get out and let him roam a bit (the more space the better). No cats, but another confident dog could be great.

■ Must Have:

● Time, energy, and space to get him exercise

● No cats (not actually sure how he’d do, but he wants to chase them when we see them in the neighborhood)

■ Would Be Good to Have:

● Another dog (preferably not mid-sized)

● The will to work on his anxiety (he gets triggered by certain things - like animals on TV - and with some work could probably deal with those triggers better)

● No little kids (again, he’s not aggressive but will sort of just growl and walk away)

If interested, please reach out to harrison@reworktraining.org.

JETER

Name: Jeter Blue

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Blue nose

Birthday: 8/1/2019

Neutered

Jeter is truly the most loyal, sweet, loving, cuddly pit bull you’ll ever meet. He is not without issues, as we all are. In 2020, two of our dogs got in a very serious fight. Jeter went to a live in trainer for five weeks. He is VERY well behaved, but still reactive. He listens perfectly and does not misbehave with a strong authority figure who is able to use some physical discipline. He would do best in a home with no other animals, and no young children. We love him and it breaks our heart to re-home this sweet boy. With three dogs and a one year old child, it is not working for our family.
