Adoptable Foster Dogs

The dogs listed here are available for adoption through Family Dogs New Life, however they are not currently at the shelter- they are staying in foster homes.
During the transition from ‘rescue’ to forever home, dogs require love and patience. A foster family provides a nurturing environment that not only helps the rescue dog better adjust to this transition but also allows us to to learn more about each dogs personality traits, which is essential in finding the dog and adoptive family the Right Fit.

Bella

Pit Bull Terrier + Boxer Mix
3 years old
Female
54 pounds

Hi! I’m bootie-shakin’ Bella!  When I meet people, I can’t help but wag, wag, wag. I’m just so happy to meet you!  I love to give kisses too.

While I’m full of energy, it doesn’t last too long. If you have a long yard, you’ll find I’m like Usain Bolt: all about the speed, but only for a bit.  Then I’m pooped and ready for nap time.  And you are welcome to cuddle with me any old time! I’m a bit of a romantic and, if allowed, am happy to watch a movie with you on the couch and I may even hold your hand. In fact, after my bed, the couch is a perfect place so sneak up any chance I get.

I love playing with strong toys, balls and tug-of-war (and I like to win too!). And I’m fascinated by birds, squirrels and cats. I’m just so darned curious and ready to play! But I’m gentle with humans all of the time (even the little ones) even when eating, getting treats or playing.

I’m very curious about other dogs and like most of them really.  Unfortunately, when I was younger I wasn’t taught any social graces, so while other dogs who bark at me from behind fences don’t bother me, I’m happiest if I’m the center of your animal universe. I’d just like to have a whole bunch of humans to love and a big yard to play in. I like to go on walks too (I even skip sometimes), but I’m just as happy to play fetch. If you’ve got the arm, I’ve got the legs!

Big Dog has a pending adoption

German Shepherd + Mastiff Mix
3 years old
Male
90 pounds

Hi! My name’s Big Dog and I’m just that – a big, mellow, lovable guy! I’ve been told I’m very good on my leash and I have nice manners meeting other four-leggers on the trail. I like my walks and meeting new dogs, but I LOVE hanging around with my favorite people and getting lots of head scratches on my big ol’ head! I’m a bit of a “flopper”: under tables, in the kitchen, wherever my people are at. I’m currently living with two other fairly small dogs and we get along just fine, but my favorite thing is definitely my foster mom and her friends! They are always impressed and proud of me for how patient I am with the neighborhood kids. I have some skills too. I already know how to “sit,” am working on “shake” and I’m good at riding in the car. I’m lucky enough to have gone on some road trips! Oh yeah, and I’ve totally got the house-training thing down. I even come with some cute nicknames: Sweet Angel Baby, The Biggest Baby, Big Bobs, BaBa, Bubs, and Big Guy. Ok, so who’s ready to snuggle with a Big Dog?! Cause I’m ready to find my forever home and snuggle with you!

Cheri

Queensland Heeler + Pit Bull Terrier Mix
2 years old
Female
35 pounds
Hello everyone, my name is Cheri but my nickname is Chouchou, which means “little darling” in French.
I am very outgoing and always greet everyone with the warmest welcome. As you can see, I’m very pretty, yet muscular, but don’t let that fool you; I’m very gentle with people and love to make friends.
My favorite activity is going for long walks and smelling all the lovely smells that nature has to offer. During these outings, I enjoy walking up to people and saying hi; it’s so lovely to see the smiles on their faces and at the end we’re all friends.
Snuggling is my favorite indoor activity, next to listening to Tom Waits music. I feel most comforted when I’m snuggling up against someone or if they rest their hand on me. In fact, my greatest wish is to be someone’s one and only. I prefer not to share you with other dogs in the home or those fluff balls called cats. I want to be your ‘road dog’, your ‘best buddy”, or your Batman to my Robin.  The only one I’d share you with are the kids. Although I want you to by my only, I’m actually very mellow and independent. I can comfortably stay in a kennel while you’re at work without barking, as long as I’m promised snacks and a walk afterwards.
If you need a little darling in your life to go outdoors and snuggle with, I’m the ChouChou you’ve been waiting for. See you soon my friend, or as I like to say- A bientot mon ami!

Hero

Pit Bull Terrier + Boxer Mix
5 years old
Male
66 pounds

I am a noble dog with a shiny coat and soulful eyes.
I am family a man. Well, a family dog anyway. I love my people and am happiest when everyone is together- whether we are hanging out watching a movie or going on a hike. I am affectionate and like to show my love with a gentle body lean, a nuzzle, and if you happen to be lying on the floor I would love to lick your face and lie on your chest. Is that cool? I know basic commands and really want to please you. Treats are great, but I’d just as soon have a belly rub, back scratch or praise. I am curious and can be a little clumsy but am told that is sort of endearing. I love walks and am very polite on a leash.  I am also developing a new found love of playing fetch.
I am also a sensitive dog and a bit of an introvert. Listen, I love you, my people, but I don’t always love hanging out with your friends. I love when we go on adventures in nature and strolls in the neighborhood, but I find mingling with the crowds at Home Depot and the Farmers Market to be a bit much. Cool? Cool. Don’t get me wrong, with good clear guidance and direction I can meet new people and be polite. But maybe when you have a big dinner party I can just hang out in my own space? I also really don’t like when you leave. I know you have to do it sometimes, but I miss you a lot. I am working on that and working on my abilities to stay calm and relaxed when I am alone but it is still hard sometimes. Just because I love you so much and like I said, I’m sensitive. Hey, we all have our issues, right?
In sum, I like hikes in the woods, drinking out of rivers, snow, snuggling up in a pile of blankets, belly rubs, romping around, and my family (including kids over 12). I don’t love dog parks, dog day care, cats, crowds or when you leave.
I am a loyal, handsome, sweet dog with personality and so much love to give in search of a family who will provide love and belly rubs in return.

Lilly

Pit Bull Terrier Mix
1 1/2 years old
Female
56 pounds

Hi, I’m Lilly! I’m a super sweet girl once I get to know you.  I’ve had a rough go at life, constantly being passed from person to person and place to place, until recently.  Because of my history, I’m a little nervous but my foster parents have really helped me to not be so worried.

I’m really quick at picking up commands and tricks.  I know sit, shake, stay, and leave a treat until I’m told to eat it.  I don’t jump up on people, but I definitely like giving kisses and will take all the belly rubs I can get.  I like to play out in the yard and eat the grass.  When it’s nice out, I try to sunbathe some too!  I like a good game of chase-the-ball or keep-away.  Even though I like exercise, I’m equally content to relax and cuddle with my foster parents and watch some Netflix. Being with my people is my favorite thing in the world. I don’t need other dogs, cats or those darn squirrels. When I’m out for a walk, the world seems like such a huge place that I tend to get excited, but I know “wait” at street corners, or “leave it” or “easy” for squirrel watching.

I’m really good in the house, too!  I have a bed that I sleep in during the days and at night.  I like the bed up on the couch, but I think my foster parents are going to try to get me to sleep in that bed in my kennel soon.  As long as my blanket goes with the bed, I think I’ll be okay with it.

I’ve been blessed with a crazy good metabolism, you know the kind that girls say they wish they had- I have it! I love to eat, so my next family will have to feed me that yummy quality food that I see sitting in the kitchen.

I am a really good girl and I’d really like to find someone who is willing to continue my training.  I’m really smart and motivated to learn, especially if you reward me with treats.

I hope you have a loving, stable home for me to come to permanently; I sure am tired of moving around, and all I really want is a forever family! I will always be loving and loyal, and I will always be ready to learn. Love, Lilly

Rocky

Pit Bull Terrier + Boxer Mix
5 years old
Male
50 pounds

Hi I’m Rocky and a champion kind of a guy! Just like my film counterpart, I too have a rags to riches story. Family Dogs saved me from a high-kill shelter in California. When I first came to Portland I was a bit nervous. Everything was just so new. But now, thanks to the loving care of my foster mom, I’m so happy, I’m just silly sometimes. I have even learned some cool tricks such as sit, stay, lay down, come, shake, roll over and can even catch treats off my nose (sometimes I get real excited though and miss). I also love walks and am pretty good on a leash, but because I’m still learning not to pull I do better with a harness. I’m house-trained and can be in a crate, but really don’t need it. I like to sleep on the couch most of the day while my foster mom’s at work.
My favorite thing though is being around my people! I like children, but do seem to be at my best with teenagers or adults. Sometimes the younger rambunctious kids confuse me. I haven’t had a chance to play in a pack yet, but I have had one on one sleepovers and play dates with some female dog friends and that was really fun! Just like the other Rocky, I’m kindhearted, loyal and want to find forever happiness with a family who loves me!

Wally

Pit Bull Terrier Mix
3 years old
Male
58 pounds

Hi, my name is Wally, short for Walnut.  I live with my dog friend Berni and she is alright, but my main purpose in life is to love my people and follow them wherever they go.  I am easy for the most part, I happily go in my crate every day with a treat and patiently wait for you to come home.  I cheer when you come home, and cry a little when you leave.  When you are home, I love to stay close and will sit patiently by your side no matter what you’re doing.  I am house-broken, crate-trained, and know basic commands.  I know to sit and wait patiently for my meals until you say it is okay for me to eat and I love car rides because it means I get to be with you!  I am friendly pup and love to meet new humans.
Because I was abandoned and left to fend for myself, I would do best with a family who understands I may need some extra care and supervision to adjust to my new home.  I can be reactive when I see other dogs while on my leash and I’ve never had my own toys before, so sometimes I can be possessive when my dog sister gets near my toys (humans are fine they can play with my toys all they want).  Did I mention I LOVE tennis balls?  The good news is, I am working with my foster parents and with a trainer to learn to be more polite.  I love to learn because it makes my people happy and I am improving each week.  My foster parents say I make them smile, I have that puppy silliness, but the resilience, maturity, and intelligence of a grown-up dog.  If you need a goofy, fun-loving guy to make you laugh, be your cuddlebug, and stay by your side, I am the dog for you!
