Adoptable Foster Dogs

The dogs listed here are available for adoption through Family Dogs New Life, however they are not currently at the shelter- they are staying in foster homes.
During the transition from ‘rescue’ to forever home, dogs require love and patience. A foster family provides a nurturing environment that not only helps the rescue dog better adjust to this transition but also allows us to to learn more about each dogs personality traits, which is essential in finding the dog and adoptive family the Right Fit.
If you are interested in meeting one of these adoptable foster dogs please email: adoptafosterdog@familydogsnewlife.org.

Bailey

Pit Bull Terrier
7 1/2 years old
Female
58 pounds

Hi, I’m Bailey! I should tell you up front, my favorite thing in the whole world is SNUGGLING and giving hugs. When you come down to my level I just have to put my head on your shoulder so you’ll give me a squeeze! I’m a Cali transplant and I’m loving the PNW and all the little critters there are to keep track of! I’ll be sure to chase them out of the yard! You see I’m not a fan of of little critters like squirrels, chickens, or those pesky kitty cats!
I have a giant foster brother who I play with all the time though! We love to wrestle and run then plop down for some snuggles. He likes to think we can share dinner, but I’m not really one to share my dinner or my bones. If he wants those- he needs to play with his own! I’d also love a yard of my own to run and play in. Oh you know what else we should do? Ride in the car together! I love a good car ride and get so excited when you grab my leash to go out for a walk by bum wiggles will melt your heart (at least that’s what my foster mom says!) If you think a spunky little love like me would be a perfect addition to your life at home we should meet!

Bear

Pit Bull Terrier Mix
6 years old
Male
70 pounds

I’m a simple man really.
I was surrendered due to no fault of my own, my family lost their housing and had to take me to the shelter. I grew up with kids and a chill beagle. I would love a home with people around and maybe the right canine companion. Hey I got preferences!
I hear other dogs struggle with some things that come quite easy to me. House training, I gots it! Staying home alone and listening to jazz is fine with me. I will just wait on my bed or peek out the window until you get home where I will greet you with adoring wiggles. I have no interest in chewing up your things or raiding the fridge, I respect your space! I do need you to support me in protecting my personal bubble when it comes to other dogs. You know that coworker that talks too close? Kind of how I feel with new dogs and pushy pups. I am open to a low key canine companion that will take it slow with me.
I’m not leash reactive and love my walks don’t let my 70 lbs fool you, I walk great no pulling. Okay lets be real, sometimes when I see a squirrel you know I just want to get closer, but I redirect real quick. I know basic commands and have so much potential to learn! I love treats and that makes me very trainable. So far I got sit, lay down, shake, wait and stay. Hiking? I’m into it! Exploring? I’m your guy. Meeting new people- let’s socialize! I have moderate activity needs, (no need to throw the ball for me 1,000 times), I just like to cruise the neighborhood or go for a hike then let’s come home and catch up on our reading and take a nap. Fur concerns? I don’t have a  lot of hair to shed! On the downside you’re going to have to get me a sweater for this fall. But I hear Portlanders like to knit.  Make me a sweater and let’s welcome fall together?

Bella has a pending adoption

Pit Bull Terrier + Boxer Mix
3 years old
Female
54 pounds

Hi! I’m bootie-shakin’ Bella!  When I meet people, I can’t help but wag, wag, wag. I’m just so happy to meet you!  I love to give kisses too.

While I’m full of energy, it doesn’t last too long. If you have a long yard, you’ll find I’m like Usain Bolt: all about the speed, but only for a bit.  Then I’m pooped and ready for nap time.  And you are welcome to cuddle with me any old time! I’m a bit of a romantic and, if allowed, am happy to watch a movie with you on the couch and I may even hold your hand. In fact, after my bed, the couch is a perfect place so sneak up any chance I get.

I love playing with strong toys, balls and tug-of-war (and I like to win too!). And I’m fascinated by birds, squirrels and cats. I’m just so darned curious and ready to play! But I’m gentle with humans all of the time (even the little ones) even when eating, getting treats or playing.

I’m very curious about other dogs and like most of them really.  Unfortunately, when I was younger I wasn’t taught any social graces, so while other dogs who bark at me from behind fences don’t bother me, I’m happiest if I’m the center of your animal universe. I’d just like to have a whole bunch of humans to love and a big yard to play in. I like to go on walks too (I even skip sometimes), but I’m just as happy to play fetch. If you’ve got the arm, I’ve got the legs!

Hero

Pit Bull Terrier + Boxer Mix

I am a noble dog with a shiny coat and soulful eyes.
I am family a man. Well, a family dog anyway. I love my people and am happiest when everyone is together- whether we are hanging out watching a movie or going on a hike. I am affectionate and like to show my love with a gentle body lean, a nuzzle, and if you happen to be lying on the floor I would love to lick your face and lie on your chest. Is that cool? I know basic commands and really want to please you. Treats are great, but I’d just as soon have a belly rub, back scratch or praise. I am curious and can be a little clumsy but am told that is sort of endearing. I love walks and am very polite on a leash.  I am also developing a new found love of playing fetch.
I am also a sensitive dog and a bit of an introvert. Listen, I love you, my people, but I don’t always love hanging out with your friends. I love when we go on adventures in nature and strolls in the neighborhood, but I find mingling with the crowds at Home Depot and the Farmers Market to be a bit much. Cool? Cool. Don’t get me wrong, with good clear guidance and direction I can meet new people and be polite. But maybe when you have a big dinner party I can just hang out in my own space? I also really don’t like when you leave. I know you have to do it sometimes, but I miss you a lot. I am working on that and working on my abilities to stay calm and relaxed when I am alone but it is still hard sometimes. Just because I love you so much and like I said, I’m sensitive. Hey, we all have our issues, right?
In sum, I like hikes in the woods, drinking out of rivers, snow, snuggling up in a pile of blankets, belly rubs, romping around, and my family (including kids over 12). I don’t love dog parks, dog day care, cats, crowds or when you leave.
I am a loyal, handsome, sweet dog with personality and so much love to give in search of a family who will provide love and belly rubs in return.

Lilly Bear

Pit Bull Terrier Mix
7 years old
Female
56 pounds

Hello!  My name is Lilly but I also answer to Lillybear, because as you can guess – I love bear hugs! When asked, I decided I would best describe myself as super affectionate and expressive! My energy and enthusiasm for life match my age. I pride myself in staying in peak condition and would do great with long walks, runs or hikes as long as you’re by my side! Even though I’m from California I had a great time with all this snow; it was like hide and seek with my outdoor toys!! Its true I get excited at times, but I have learned some restraint while living with my 10 pound foster sister. She prefers a more gentle approach. Given that, I would probably do better with slightly older children. I would feel terrible if I accidentally knocked over a toddler! I am house and crate-trained, but to be honest I don’t spend much time alone. My foster parents work different shifts. It’s nice for me and my foster sister! And I know a few basic commands. Ok, it’s true, I listen best when there are treats involved. I enjoy cuddling with a blanket on the couch, chewing on dental bones, running laps in the yard and welcoming you home. But giving kisses is one of my all-time favorite activities! I have so much love and devotion to share with you, won’t you please give me a chance for a forever home?

Penelope

German Shepherd Mix
4 years old
Female
69 pounds

As happy as a child finding a brand-new penny, that’s our Penelope/Pen/Penny! Whatever name you use,
“P” is full of joy and has a tail that never stops!
Miss Penny is sweetness and light. And those eyes! You can just get lost in them. Her favorite things
include her people, squeaky toys (especially her Santa monkey), and yummy wet food and treats. She
loves adults and children, although older children would be preferable as she is afraid of loud noises such
as screaming. She’d benefit most being the only animal in the house as she can be reactive to other
dogs. She has spent time with a trainer though and enjoys her walks on leash with a gentle leader and
her beloved Santa monkey. Otherwise she is pretty laid back and just as happy to run around the yard
and play fetch, roll in the grass or naw on a bone to occupy herself.
Like all four-legged kids, she’ll need to be reminded to stay off the couch (“C’mon, it looks like a gigantic
dog bed!”), but she’s an angel with all other inside manners. She’ll wait patiently to be released to eat her
meals, enjoys her nighttime rest in her crate (“Especially with a nut butter Kong!”), and goes potty outside,
as far away as possible. She’s also a quiet girl and only barks if a noise outside really spooks her.
Love bug. Cutie pie. Sweet pea. She’s all this and more, and looking for her forever home.
