Adoptable Foster Dogs

The dogs listed here are available for adoption through Family Dogs New Life, however they are not currently at the shelter- they are staying in foster homes.
During the transition from ‘rescue’ to forever home, dogs require love and patience. A foster family provides a nurturing environment that not only helps the rescue dog better adjust to this transition but also allows us to to learn more about each dogs personality traits, which is essential in finding the dog and adoptive family the Right Fit.
If you are interested in meeting one of these adoptable foster dogs please email: adoptafosterdog@familydogsnewlife.org.

Bo

Pit Bull Terrier
3 years old
Male
55 pounds

Letter to my new family,
Glad to meet you, want to meet you, I’m Bo!
If I could, I’d show my enthusiasm by running up and jumping on you, all the while kissing and talking about my love for you. I know, that’s kind of rude, but I can’t change all at once. Hey, I’m an enthusiastic guy! I can see myself part of an active family. We would walk, run and hike together, then come home to a meal and some serious cuddling on the couch. I’m a great date! I’m a party guy, I love to play with other dogs. I’m lucky, right now I have three cool foster brothers each a different breed. I play fair and accommodate all styles of play but my favorite brother is a Pit like me. I can be myself with him, no censorship, just crazy wrestling, uninhibited fun, then we cuddle after!
I gotta confess though, I can be a little insecure at first, especially on the leash. I act tough at first because I don’t want to be taken advantage of for my tender loving heart. I can’t keep it up for long though, cause I just want to be the best friend another dog can have. I’m also learning walks do not mean hunts. Gosh, it’s hard to resist a rustling in the bushes or a cat running out of nowhere. I forget I’m strong, it’s a bad habit I gotta break. It’s my enthusiasm again, I hunt hard, I play hard, and I LOVE hard.
I love you already,
Bo

Charlie

Pit Bull Terrier
2 ½ years old
Male
70 pounds

Are you a fan of dogs with big heads? If so, we need to meet! My name is Charlie and my heart is as big as my head!  I love to lean against people and when they return the affection, I am all kisses and hugs! My nickname is the Gentle Giant as I am very polite. As a gentleman, I wait patiently for my food, take treats gently, and am respectful of my foster brother when we play. My history is sad as I came from an outdoor-only situation, but I have adapted quickly to being an indoor dog – which I love! You probably noticed I also lost an eye, but it hasn’t affected my ability to do anything, including playing ball! And the ladies tell me I’m more handsome than ever! I can be wary of men sometimes, but am working on building up my confidence and my foster father has made me feel very safe. Now having the luxury of being an indoor dog, my house manners include being house and crate-trained, and my foster father has taught me several commands. I have to admit though presented with the opportunity I do like to chew on things sometimes. My foster dad’s crocs are particularly tasty and fun! Given my size, an adoptive family with pit bull experience would be best. So if you have been wishing for lots of love in the form of a big pittie with a huge heart – then I am the Gentle Giant who can make your dream come true!

Daisy

Pit Bull Terrier
8 years old
Female
60 pounds

Hi my name’s Daisy and first things first; I LOVE People! I’m just a mellow California girl who recently relocated to Portland and I am looking for people to love. Like my home state, I am sunny, sweet and chill, but can sometimes quickly switch to an intensely soulful serious side. I like daily walks, car rides, chasing cats and squirrels, playdates with my buddy Otis, a pitbull a little bit smaller than me, and long naps. I also really REALLY love nothing better than cuddling on the sofa with my foster mom to watch a movie, or being anyplace close to her or any other people. On walks I tell EVERYBODY hello! Sometimes I get so excited I pull a little on my leash. Stuffed toys are great fun to fling around and de-stuff, and sometimes I get so happy I just have to roll on my back, wiggle-waggle around and kick up my heels – that’s just the kind of goofy free spirit I am! Hate peanut butter, but love cheese wiz.

I am good with kids, I can be very gentle, but sometimes I forget my size so 8 and older would be best. When I am left home alone it makes me nervous and scared, but when I am left in my crate I do just fine waiting for everyone to get home, so a home with someone with another dog or someone who is home a lot would be ideal. I like other pitbulls and dogs close to my own size, but little dogs and cats are not a good fit for me. Oh! And my old life was rough, so sometimes I look for food on the counters (sorry!) but I am learning not to do that since I get plenty of food now. I really really want a family to love, if you take me home I will lay at your feet and gaze at you with love from my deep soulful eyes, give you some kisses, follow you around and love you forever!

Hero

Pit Bull Terrier + Boxer Mix
5 years old
Male
55 pounds

Hi, I am Hero- noble, handsome, and completely charming. I have a stoic face, soulful eyes and wagging tail. Like any hero, I am a real lover- infamous for my kiss attacks and cuddling. I also like tug-of-war, chasing and being chased around the yard, and of course, walks. And about walks, I’m great on a leash! And fear not, it is a Hero’s duty to alert you of and protect you from squirrels as we journey along! But I also know how to relax. If you’re busy or out for the afternoon, I will appreciate a long, relaxing nap. Worried about the barking? Don’t be. I save my barks for when I think it really matters- the rest of the time I communicate with nuzzles, body leans, and tail wags. I’m happy to follow basic commands, especially if it makes you happy with me because it is in my nature to please. That is not to say I don’t love a good belly rub or a treat for being good, but I am satisfied just being in your company and knowing you’re pleased with me.
On the whole I am a very easy-going dog. I can get a little excited and overwhelmed on occasion- like when there are new people or dogs in my home. When that happens I need some help staying relaxed and calm so that I can maintain my good behavior- but if you give me plenty of clear direction I am happy to follow it and we can all get along nicely. I have already learned so much about making friends! I like children, but would be more comfortable if they were older, say eight or so. I also do really well with most other dogs! But no cats- I like them, chasing them anyway, but it is not a mutual affection. I would do best in an a home with patient and understanding parents who will help give me that extra structure and safety in potentially stressful situations.  And in a home where there are lots of belly rubs.
I am looking for a forever home with a family who will appreciate all the loyalty and unconditional love that this Hero has to offer. Could that be you? Let’s meet and find out!

Nu

Pit Bull Terrier
7 years old
Female
57 pounds

Hi! My name is Nu and I really want a home to call my own.  I have one of the best smiles you will ever see, and I love to share it, especially to my person.  I’m a very sweet girl who really wants nothing more than a person to cuddle up with – I’ll lay on my bed, on your bed if I’m allowed, or on our sofa.
I really do love being around my people. I think it’s because I had to spend the night at a few different places as I was growing up, sometimes by myself. I don’t really like to think about those days because it got pretty rough. I used to get pretty anxious going to different places, but my foster person has been so good to me! I’ve had formal training and learned to feel more confident.  It’s still takes a little work for me, though, so you’ll need to give me some time and hold my paw through new experiences.  Because of the rough times I had (when some people thought I would be a good “bait dog” and let other dogs attack me), I’m not very good with other dogs.  The training really helped me, but we still have to be really careful because I might react too quickly.
I love, love, love being around my people. Wait, I already said that. I really like little kid type people, too. And with some work and dedication, I might fit in with some new pet brothers and sisters…but then again, being an only child does sound nice. I know some tricks, too! I can sit and stay and will come as soon as I’m called (with a smile of course). I don’t get into any trouble when I’m left home by myself, and even though it’s not very polite to talk about, but I’m also perfectly potty trained. I love going for long walks, and rides in the car, and playing fetch!
Oh my, I just thought about sitting with you watching TV and it absolutely made me smile. I’m thinking we should give that a try!

Penny

Shar Pei Mix
4 1/2 years old
Female
40 pounds

Are you looking for a polite little lady that needs some love? Maybe we are meant to be…let me introduce myself, my humans call me Penny, I also answer to sweetheart, little turkey, punkin’, Pennster, among other names my silly foster humans decide to make up for me.
I met my foster folks about a month ago and for the first few days I wasn’t sure about this “new life”. You see I spent the majority of last year in a place they call “the shelter”…although everyone there was nice and they did save me from a scary “kill shelter” in California, I was very scared. Then these wonderful folks from Family Dogs New Life gave me another chance and took me to my new foster home.
I warmed up pretty quickly to my foster mom but had a very hard time trusting my foster dad.  But after a couple weeks, I realized he is a good guy and I actually really like him now! Once I feel comfortable, I love giving kisses, sometimes it’s a sneaky kiss on their hand, but my favorites to give are the “right in your face” type of kisses!
My foster mom says that I’m very smart and a quick learner. I learned “sit” in just a day! I also learned how to “wait” before eating my food and “wait” before I can just run outside when mom opens the door. And I don’t even need treats to do that; I just need some love and lots of pets.
I love my kennel and I am 100% kennel trained.  I am working on my leash manners (I get a little scared outside, so I just need some re-assurance, and with time I know I will do great!)
I live with a foster brother, he is a 10 year old Siberian Husky, and I really enjoy his company. I follow him everywhere and he helped me get over many of my fears. I would love to be in a home with another dog, of course we’d have to meet first.
My foster moms 3 year old niece came over the other day and at first I was a little confused by this little human. But I decided that hand licking was an appropriate move, so I went for it. She didn’t taste sour or anything, so that was a pleasant surprise! Those little ones move really fast, so I get a little scared of that. But mom says I don’t have a mean bone in my body, I would just like a home with kiddos that are a little bit older.
I love playing with my blankets, I enjoy my toys and not at all interested in chewing shoes or couches (I hear that’s a big plus!).
I am looking forward to meeting my forever family; I have a lot of love to give. My foster mom is amazed every day by the improvements I am making and says with just a little patience I will be an amazing companion.

So come on, what are you waiting for?
Lots of kisses, Penny
